Giselle Denis
As children, we were always creating something. My mother always had a project for us to work on. Arts and crafts were a daily activity on our home. Throughout school I always excelled in art class, and began to nurture the talent I’d been given. In high school, I began doing portrait commissions, and took a few years after high school to work, and do commissions on the side.
I got a degree in Theology, majoring in music—voice and piano. Throughout college I hardly did any art due to the demanding schedule. After college, I got married and shortly after I had major foot surgery. The recovery was about 4 months, and this is when I got back into painting.
Painting became like therapy to me. My passion for painting was being renewed. It was a good distraction from the pain I was in. I began to paint small pieces, but then shortly after, felt the urgency to paint large, free and whimsical. Splashes of vibrant color became more important to me than tiny details. Painting large pieces helped me get over the fear of making mistakes and I felt freedom inside myself as I created. I began to trust the process of creating art. Now, more than ever, I know the power art-making can have on our well-being—physically, emotionally, mentally & spiritually.
