Cheri Denis

Cheri Denis was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1951. From her earliest years, the influence of her mother, artist Rose Marie Yablonsky, made art & poetry an integral part of her life. Cheri's degree is in English and Psychology, however, in 1972 she felt called to continue her mother’s legacy by devoting her life's work to art. “As I create each painting and write each poem it is like the birthing of something new in my life, like the process of a butterfly emerging from it’s cocoon.” Cheri career as an artist spans over 35 years and it never occurred to her that she would one day become a poet as well, and a prolific one at that. In 1992, Cheri was diagnosed with spastic disphonia, a neurological disorder that had reduced her voice to a whisper. However, it was at this precise time that something extraordinary happened. It came in the inspiration that just began to flow in the form of poetry. "A Mother’s Love", "My Father’s Heart", "True Love", "The Treasure Chest", “The Garden” ... title after title flowed from Cheri's pen. Shortly after she published her poetry parchments people began calling and emailing to express the way in which her poetry had touched their hearts. Cheri's poems have been read at memorial services and framed as family heirlooms. Cheri has been interviewed on many occasions on CKER radio, featuring her poetry. Radio host Jana Lapel commented that through her poetry Cheri was given a voice to speak the language of the heart Her art has been featured in TV interviews and numerous newspaper and magazine articles. “The Master Artist, is the inspiration behind all that I do… He is the Creator of all this beauty and my paintings are a mere reflection of His mastery. My poetry is all about our relationships… with the Master Artist and with the people He’s given us to love… His masterpieces.” Cheri's work has been auctioned to raise funds for numerous organizations, including: The Mustard Seed, Water for People in Canada & the US, the University Hospital, Sherwood Park Sexual Assault Center, International Conference of Women Police, Festival Place Art Center, Vanguard College, Youth Emergency Shelter, Sarnia & District Association for Community Living, Cross Cancer Institute & Qualicum Beach Art Center. Cheri’s paintings & poetry focus on the beauty, love and truth that sustain us throughout a lifetime.
